Click here tRiziki News – May 2023 Dear All, It has been rather a long time since we have been able to send a newsletter, but here is the latest news from Liz at Riziki. Dear Ian and Diana, Greetings from a beautifully sunny Riziki. We had rain last night, woke up to a cloudy morning and now the sun is out. Everything is looking good in the farm, as you can see in the pictures; it’s good to see Riziki the way we know and love. We have grown a bit of everything this season, Cereals; we have wheat and maize; beans and soya beans. Vegetables include Swiss chard, cabbage, potatoes and cowpeas (we use the leaves as vegetable); on fruits, we are now enjoying our own watermelons from the farm. We also seem to have acquired a sheep! We have just finished a 2½ week break with the children. It went by so fast, the high schoolers spent most of it catching up with their school assignments and some personal study. While the young ones happily helped with house chores and some bit of farm work together with Hellen and Irene. 2 They were even happier with the sugarcane snack (from our farm) that they enjoyed after a morning of helping around the compound. Afternoons were spent colouring, as it was raining most afternoons, we were grateful to have a good supply of colouring books and pens received from different friends who have visited us from the UK, this year. So, it was board games and colouring most afternoons. Two exciting events did happen during the break. One was a visit from Story Train. The group of 4 was with us for 2 nights and brought us African music and stories told animatedly. We invited our neighbour's children (one of aims is to support and nurture children in the local community) and it made for a very exciting afternoon for everyone as they participated in story, dance and art. The other exciting event was after an afternoon of rain; it finally stopped at 7:30 pm and we were greeted by flying termites everywhere. As you might be aware, flying termites are a delicacy in some communities, not only in Kenya but around the world. So, the kids were around places with light in the compound, collecting the termites that were soon after on their plates for a delayed dinner so they could be enjoyed together with the main meal. Hellen comes from the community in Kenya that most enjoys this delicacy and she and some of the girls helped prepare them. I hope next time you are in Kenya we can make some for you . Enjoying sugar cane 3 We remember these occasional feasts in the late 1960s(!!!) when we lived in Maseno. Children, in particular caught ant ate flying termites by the handful! There was Sunday school week, one of the Sundays, first time I have seen Kimani in a suit and tie! He was part the children in charge of leading the church programme that day. Our Evans Lokol was the preacher for the day! Riziki children are loved and well taken care of in the church and are given every chance to participate. I am glad that they are all very, very active in church. Youngest to oldest. It was a good break and now everyone is back to school, with a very tight schedule. Play time is now limited to weekends for the young ones. They are doing very well in school with most of them being above average with the new grading system. High schoolers are in their final classes, and most are giving their best, fully aware of how lucky they are to have the chance to come this far. Thank you all that love and support us. We thank God for you! Baraka Liz We thank all of you, our supporters, for your continued interest in Riziki. Without you, Riziki would not exist! After dark, catching and preparing the feast of flying termites Collins, our oldest young man, in Magadi, where he helps to cook for volunteer groups. 4 Our comments and prayer concerns. The older children preparing for final school exams, leading to college or employment. We thank God for the rain which has restored the land, leading to thriving crops and avoids the need to purchase water. The need for small sinks for saving water in the laundry. The proposed new chicken shed. We give thanks to all our Riziki friends for continued support, in any way, without whom Riziki could not continue. Many blessings, Ian & Diana.
